Star Throwers
Start time:
5th June 00:00
Finish time:
5th June 00:00
Venue:
Wymondham
Description:
With 1 in 3 people affected by cancer a family physician, and for many years a speciality doctor in cancer medicine, Dr. Henry Mannings felt the increasing need to provide a centre where people either with cancer, or those supporting people affected by it could go. The need became apparent with the realisation that many people with cancer had no understanding of their disease or the opportunity to sit, discuss and be given expert time in order to deal with their condition.
With the support of those who had personally experienced help from Dr Henry Mannings, and professionals who had seen a great need for this help, he opened Star Throwers in Wymondham at the end of last year. This centre has been designed to get away from a clinical environment, which many find intimidating and unwelcoming. It is comparable to walking into someone\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s home, and is there for those with cancer along with family and friends. They can sit down with a cup of coffee and have a chat with the professionals, and people who have been through similar experiences. These are people who feel passionately about the importance of human kindness, and all are unpaid volunteers.
Star Throwers is a charity dedicated to those who are either personally experiencing, or are at particular risk of developing cancer. It provides unbiased advice on various treatments, and any options that are available. Facilities include various forms of massage eg aromatherapy, also reflexology, reiki, osteopathy and pilates, which can be restful and very beneficial experiences.
There is a guest room with en suite shower room for anyone needing a quiet rest during their visit.
A programme for groups and senior school pupils is now in place. This encourages open discussion with professionals about cancer, and covers appropriate subjects including self examination for breast and testicular cancer. Having referred to the statistic of 1 in 3 being affected by cancer it is essential to educate and encourage people to understand and discuss it.
Star Throwers is still developing in order to meet the ongoing needs of people. Everyone is welcome, but in order to see someone specific they need to telephone first.
The origin of the name for the charity is explained by the following \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" After a heavy storm, a boy walked along the beach throwing the stranded starfish back into the sea. A man watching shouted \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'there are too many of them - it won\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t make any difference.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' As the boy threw another starfish back into the sea, he smiled and replied \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'it made a difference to that one!\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"

Over the past four years the ensemble has established a niche for itself, grown increasingly popular and has performed with eminent soloists to give fresh and vibrant performances.

Thetford Dancers take first step on Awards Ladder
Start time:
15th June 08:00
Finish time:
15th June 09:30
Venue:
Carnegie Rooms / Abbey Neighbourhood Centre
Description:
Two students from Thetford?s popular Ballroom and Latin Dance classes have been inspired to take the first in a series of nationally recognised social dance awards. On June 13th, Alicja Kreglewska and Kinga Kaczmarek travelled to Oxford and joined other students taking part in International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA) Examinations, and both were successful in gaining the IDTA Social Dance Award.
To gain the Dance Award, Alicja and Kinga had to demonstrate their proficiency by performing two ballroom and two Latin dances with their instructor, Xavier Navarre, whilst being assessed by an external, independent IDTA examiner.
Alicja, who belonged to a folk dance group as a child and has attended the Thetford class since it began said how much she enjoys the class;
?Dancing gives you great energy. I always feel happy and positively charged after a dance class. It is great exercise too. Whoever thinks that dancing doesn?t improve fitness should try dance quickstep!?
Earlier this year, Breckland Council organised a series of dance taster sessions as part of the Thetford Healthy Town initiative. Following on from these sessions, dance has really taken off in the town. The Ballroom and Latin Class has built up a regular attendance of almost 50 keen dancers, meeting weekly at the Carnegie Rooms on Wednesday nights from 8 ? 9.30pm. After a summer break, the class will start again in September and run until Christmas
Breckland Council Executive Member for Communities and Benefits, Adrian Stasiak, said;
?Dance classes are a great way of meeting people, making friends and improving fitness. All ages and skill levels can come along and we guarantee you?ll be made welcome and will have a great time. Alicja and Kinga have shown a real enthusiasm and commitment to the class and I congratulate them on their success?.
Another Latin American favourite is now on offer in the town; new weekly Salsa Dance classes for beginners are being held at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesdays, running 7-8pm until 4th August. Older residents are also set to benefit from the Thetford Healthy Town dance initiative later in the year, when Norfolk Dance will be running chair-based dance classes in sheltered housing in Thetford.
These dance classes have been organised as part of the Thetford Healthy Town project, an initiative which seeks to encourage residents to participate in active pursuits. For more information about dance classes in Thetford, contact Holly Gilbert, Community Health Officer on 01842 757350; holly.golbert@norfolk.nhs.uk.

Official key handover for new homeless hostel
Start time:
15th June 15:30
Finish time:
15th June 23:55
Venue:
John Room House
Description:
Breckland Council has received the keys to the new state-of-the-art ?1.3m, John Room House in Thetford, which will provide accommodation for single homeless people across Breckland.
The keys were received by Breckland Council?s Executive member for Housing, Paul Claussen, from Robert Carter of RG Carter Construction, the company commissioned to refurbish and adapt the original building and construct a new housing block adjacent to the original building.
The doors of the facility will re- open to residents for the first time within the next few weeks, and will provide accommodation for vulnerable single homeless people aged between 18 ? 70 years of both sexes who are homeless and who have support needs.
The original building which houses ten single bedsits complete with their own kitchenette, living area and bathroom has been completely transformed. Seven will be on the ground floor, one of which will cater for people in wheelchairs, alongside an office, interview room, communal living room and laundry room.
All bricks and windows from the original building have been cleaned and re-used, and the whole site has been built to the latest eco-standards.
A brand new two-storey building made up of 12 move-on flats, designed to act as a stepping stone for residents on the way to moving into their own home, has been built using modern design techniques. The building comes complete with a grass roof, chosen for its bio-diversity and eco properties, and windows on the lower floor have been coated preventing people seeing in.
Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Housing said: ?The difference that has been made to the hostel in such a short space of time is incredible and I know it will be very much appreciated.
?It isn?t just the physical improvements that will bring benefits, the project will also provided the council with an opportunity to develop further networks and hopefully encourage hostel residents to secure work and training opportunities that are being offered through local enterprises and training agencies?
Robert Carter of RG Carter Construction, said; ?I am delighted to be delivering the Official Key Hand over to Breckland Council. As a local company, we are pleased to have been associated with this important project. The new building hosts modern facilities which will create a safe and comfortable environment.?
The ?1.1m project has been funded by Breckland Council, which owns the buildings, and a contract to provide support services and management has been awarded to St. Johns Housing Trust, a supported housing provider based in Lowestoft.

ATTLEBOROUGH DEMENTIA CARERS GROUP
Start time:
15th June 16:10
Finish time:
15th June 23:55
Venue:
Attleborough
Description:
As a carer for my wife who was diagnosed with Alzheimer\\\'s some five and a half years ago, I have been feeling that I had learned things the hard way. Eventually when I made contact with my fellow peers, through the Alzheimer\\\'s society, I found they were saying very similar things.
The National Dementia Strategy talks a lot about carers and peer groups, but getting others to actually listen to them and act, seems to take more than just one person.
I see the gaps in the service, viewed from the inside, the carer\\\'s side, but when the professionals look from the outside, they do not seem to see the same as myself. I ask myself is it just me, and I answer no! If I were part of a group making the same points, I feel that this could make a difference and enable the hard learnt lessons to benefit those about to embark on this difficult task.
I have been looking for a group where I can discuss some of these shortfalls, to create action plans that can be proposed to local or even national authorities, but I haven?t managed to find one. On this basis I thought that I should set up my own group.
So who would like to be part of this group? I live in Attleborough and have a large conservatory where we could meet, perhaps once a month, to review and discuss any ideas, a chance to bounce them around and plan how to move something forward, to counterbalance the continence moves that are going in the other direction
I am not really a continence stirrer; I just want things to be different for those about to embark on this journey.

New youth club launched - Attleborough
Start time:
18th June 06:00
Finish time:
18th June 09:00
Venue:
Attleborough Community and Enterprise Centre
Description:
Youngsters in Attleborough have given the thumbs up to a new youth club.
A number of young people in Attleborough took advantage of a new youth facility in the town when it opened its doors.
The youth facility has been implemented thanks to close partnership working between parents, volunteers, Attleborough Youth Project Committee and the local Safer Neighbourhood Team.
The youth club was set up as a direct response to young people feeling there was a lack of activities in the town and surrounding area for the younger generation.
Youngsters between the ages of 11 to16 are being encouraged to come along and have fun at the new club where they can make friends, play games, listen to music or just chill out with a drink and something from the tuck shop.
The club has a range of equipment for young people to enjoy including:
? Wii.
? Sound system and a range of music.
? Pool table.
? PlayStation 2.
? Bean bags.
The youth club opens every Friday evening between 6pm-9pm at the Attleborough Community and Enterprise Centre, Church Street, Attleborough and is run by local trained volunteers. Entry fee is 50p.
Attleborough PCSO Gary Szabo said: ?It is great to see this much needed youth facility up and running for young people in Attleborough and the surrounding parishes. Youngsters are encouraged to come along to find out what it\'s about, make friends and have a say in what the club should offer them.\"
Alison Taylor, Attleborough Youth Project chairperson said: ?We have all been working hard on this project to get it up and running, and we now owe a big thanks to Jane Bartram, Manager of the centre for allowing us to have a Friday night slot. We want the youngsters to tell us what equipment they would like to use and also if there are any other activities they would like us to do. We want their involvement so this facility can evolve into somewhere they want to spend time in. We are a friendly bunch of people who are open to suggestions.?
Ellie Peyrebrune, Attleborough Youth Project committee member said: ?We have been working together for the past 18-months to provide a youth facility in the town. We hope the club will tackle issues of boredom and provide a positive weekly activity for young people in the Attleborough area. We have raised money for equipment by arranging a number of fundraising events. Any suggestions for funding or sponsorship would be much appreciated.?
Youngsters are being encouraged to become a fan of Attleborough Youth Project on Facebook. You can also become a fan of Norfolk Police Youth Panel by visiting www.facebook.com/norfolkpyp.

A wildlife discovery day for all the family!
Your wildlife questions answered:
- Did you know that otters have returned to the Tiffey valley after a long absence?
- Why is it important to protect water voles that live in the valley?
- When do conservationists help toads across the road?
- Some hedgehogs need help to survive the winter. Which ones?
- Why don?t nature reserves look after themselves? Why does our Local Nature Reserve, Toll?s Meadow, have to be mown and the mowings raked up by volunteers?
- Why do conservationists sometimes cut down trees on nature reserves?
- Norfolk Wildlife Trust?s ancient woodland, Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe, may be thousands of years old. So why do volunteers cut some of the trees down to ground level on winter weekends?
If you?d like to know the answer to these and other wildlife questions, or have questions of your own, come along to the fair and help to celebrate the wealth of Wymondham?s wildlife and attractive countryside. There will be experts of all kinds to answer your queries, including Norfolk Wildlife Trust staff.

this is always a lively and very entertaining event and everyone is welcome, either as an entrant or just to enjoy the huge variety of exhibits. There are of course, the various horticultural classes of flowers, fruit and vegetables and the judging is of the highest standard. There is also a cookery class, a handicraft section and opportunities for photographers and poets to submit work. These sections show a wealth of local creative talent. Following the judging, at 3.00pm an auction is held and this is considered by many to be a highlight of the afternoon as the two 'auctioneers', use their considerable with humour to ensure the products are sold for charity.
Many exhibits are hotly contested and the audience can relax over tea and cakes while they enjoy the fun.
